Maps Used to Brainwash Israelis about the Non-existence of Palestine

By Genevieve Cora Fraser

Early one morning about a month ago I was awakened from a sound sleep by the phone ringing. Quite groggy, I listened to the voice of a stranger on the other end who identified herself and then insisted that I take down her address and phone number. She explained that she and her husband would like me to visit them to take me under their wing, so to speak. They were quite concerned about a letter to the editor I had written that appeared in the local paper. The letter focused on Freedom Summer 2004 in Palestine where Palestinians are mobilizing with the participation of international supporters to draw attention to the true nature of the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Bottom Line: The woman had called to inform me that there is no Palestine. In fact, Palestine never existed, and therefore there is no such thing as a Palestinian. Therefore, my letter to the editor was merely perpetuating the myth of Palestine and as a result did a great disservice to the Jewish community who were being badgered with complaints about their mistreatment of these people that didn’t exist. I thought I must be still asleep for this has been an on-going nightmare. I have received emails from around the world with the same theme. But as the woman continued with an urgency that bordered on the comic if it weren’t so tragic, I interrupted to respond.

I was tempted to say that if Palestine and Palestinians don’t exist then Palestinian suicide bombers do not exist either. But I refrained, fearing a lecture on the victimization of Israel by Arab/Muslim intruders with nary a concern about the daily onslaught of the Israeli military on the “non-existent” Palestinian civilian population. Instead I directed the conversation to United Nations Resolution 181 proposed in 1947 which Israelis and their supporters enjoy referring to when pointing out that the Arabs voted against it. This proves they were opposed to the creation of Israel in the first place, they opine. “Of course the Palestinians and the Arabs were opposed to the divvying up of their territory. They’re no dummies,” I plan to say to the next person who says this to me. “To make matters worse, the proposed 55 to 45% ratio was an obvious corporate take-over!!” I also avoided directing the conversation to this argument.

Instead, I suggested that she and her husband were perhaps confused about the non-existence of Palestine and Palestinians and they should look up the actual text of Resolution 181 which speaks of the “future Government of Palestine” and the creation of “Independent Arab and Jewish States and the Special International Regime for the City of Jerusalem.” I reiterated that this resolution which called for Jewish and Arab states was proposed for existence WITHIN Palestine. Get it? The resolution was about the future government of PALESTINE. It did not say there is to be NO Palestine, nor did it deny the existence of Palestine. And when Ben-Gurion declared the creation of the Jewish state WITHIN Palestine, he used these exact words, “We hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish State in Palestine to be called the State of Israel.”

The woman remained unfazed in her denial of the existence of Palestine and Palestinians, even after mentioning that in my medieval studies involving the Knights Templar and the Crusades there are many references to Palestine and Palestinians. Clearly, she and her husband were overly influenced by Golda Myer’s declarations about a so-called land without a people for a people without a land, I reasoned. Their denial may also have roots in the now discredited book published in 1984, Joan Peters’ “From Time Immemorial,” I thought. This tome claimed that there were no Palestinians with a life in Palestine before 1948, and therefore no such thing as Palestinian history. Apparently, the great Palestinian educator and writer Khalil Sakakini 1878 – 1953, plus scores of other Palestinians of note, never existed, if one is to believe Peters and the millions of Israelis and their supporters who deny the existence of an ancient and gifted people they have no interest in learning about.

Since that unfortunate phone conversation I have come upon a new source for the Israeli popular denial of Palestine and Palestinians which frankly strikes me as symptomatic of a will-to-genocide. Take a look at their maps. Yes, maps! The Israeli government has been playing around with their maps since 1967. The result has been what Professor Oren Yiftachel of Ben-Gurion University, a political-geographer and urban planner from Beer-Sheva, refers to as ’spatial socialization’ which is used to buttress Israel’s claim to Palestine.

At the “3rd International Conference on An End to Occupation, A Just Peace in Israel-Palestine,” recently held in Brussels, Professor Yiftachel displayed Israeli maps that show Israel without any, or often only scant and distorted, indication of the existence of Palestinians and Palestine. Through an analysis of maps, or what he refers to as a geographer as a ‘cartographic discourse,’ Yiftachel claims that Israeli school children are exposed to maps showing Ramallah and other Palestinian cities within certain Israeli districts.

“Zionists and Jews throughout the world use propaganda maps that instill ’spatial socialization’ along with claims to rightful ownership of the entire ‘Eretz Yisrael’ where Palestinians and Palestine are presented as illegitimate or incidental,” Yiftachel said. “These maps are props that pretend to present the objective reality but are actually a form of brainwashing.” He cited Israeli policy where in 1967 cartographers were asked not to show the green line; by 1978 it was illegal for Israeli map makers to display the green line. Yiftachel also showed brief examples of Palestinian maps which claim the entire land, causing what he termed ‘an asymmetric dialectic’ of spatial claims and action, including violence and terror, legitimized on territorial grounds.

Professor Yiftachel has also published “Ethnocracy: The Politics of Judaizing Israel/Palestine” and “From Fragile ‘Peace’ to Creeping Apartheid: Notes on the Recent Politics of Israel/Palestine.” Both articles can be found on the World Wide Web.

uh but “Palestine” was a construct of the Roman Empire was it not? Are not the Palestinians those refugees from Arab wars against Israel that their “brother” Arabs refuse to welcome in their countries?

  2. jcrue Says:

To follow up, was it not PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein who said, “The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people’ to oppose Zionism.”?

  3. Ahmed Ismail Says:

I have nothing to tell you ” jcrue”. The propaganda got you already.
You have to know that Palestine was an Arab state in the first palce. All historical evidence prove that and I don`t care of Zionism has convinced all of you that this is not true. So don`t even try to prove anything because whatever you say means nothing to me.
They changed the maps and brainwashed Jews. So, my words and the facts proving me right are not going to have any impact on you. Your brain is already washed.

  4. Dylan Says:

Ahmed, perhaps you would be interested in seeing how the Palestinian children are being brainwashed too.

Congratulation to Israel for having in their government a muslim representing his constituency, even if he does not sing the Jewish National Anthem.

  6. Ahmed Ismail Says:

Your anger, I don`t know exactly what you meant about Israel having a Mulsim representing “his” constituency, ……………………………..Anthem.
Could you be clear about what you mean?
If you read thei, Dylan, would you please tell me what you think he meant?

  7. jcrue Says:

Palestine did not exist before the Romans. There was no Palestine prior to the Jewish building a prosperous and culturally valuable society and culture after they left Egypt. I hold a degree in history and have studied many texts regarding the Middle East. The Jews didn’t rewrite the Roman maps and history of the region. So don’t play this stupid game with me.

If the Palestinians didn’t destroy everything they put their hands on (Gaza’s greenhouses for example), and spent the same amount of energy they do crying, whining, fighting, blowing things up, teaching their children to be hateful human bombs and walking targets, digging tunnels for weapons, and being a destructive force in the world and applied themselves to being a peaceful, prosperous, industrious, and loving people, as Mohammed taught, peace be unto him, then maybe you’re rhetoric would be worth reading.

You know for a fact that the Israelis could annihilate the Palestinians with their military but they don’t. You know for a fact that if the Palestinians could annihilate Israel, they would. That alone speaks volumes on the value of the Palestinian cause.

It is also very telling to see how the two cultures treat the other when they live among each other. One culture includes, the other excludes.

You keep blaming the Jews for everything, you will continue to assign them power over you. I feel sorry for you, Ahmed, I really do. Ignorant and angry is a terrible way to go through life.

  8. Dylan Says:

Ahmed, I think he meant that Israel has a Muslim politician (and I think more than one, actually) elected by other Muslims in the national parliament. Though he may not sing the national anthem of the Jewish state – much like the Irish Republicans do not traiditonally sit in the British House of Commons when elected – he is an elected representative of the local Muslims in Israel.

I am guessing the point is that there are not any Arab states where there are elected Jewish politicians. Indeed, there are barely any Arab states where the people have a choice as to who represents them in government. Israel, on the other hand, not only has Arab and Muslim representatives in the parliament but even (for a short time a few weeks ago) had an acting President who was an Arab.

Thank you, Dylan for clearing that comment. I really appreciate your help.
And yourAnger, I will visit that link. Have a good time there both of you.

  11. Ahmed Ismail Says:

One thing, Jcrue, you mentioned Israeli forces can annihilate Palestinians. You should know that this is impossible since no one will let them do that and you know what?If Israel even tried to do so, it would be the start of a third World War. Don`t say something unless you are very sure about it. By the way, Israeli forces are nothing without the American help. You know that well, don`t you?

  12. jcrue Says:

I have served along side both Arab and Israeli military during my years in the United States Marine Corps.

There is no comparison between the individual capabilities of the Arab versus the Israeli service member. The Arab we treat as a raw recruit due to their level of education and knowledge of war fighting. The Israeli we treat as an equal for the same reasons.

Israel has done a pretty good job holding its own in a neighborhood of hate.

None of the Arab countries would be able to fight without the help of others mostly because they do not produce the military equipment to fight on the modern battlefield. Whereas, Israel is at the forefront of military technology.

Coincidence? I do not think so.

The Syrians, the Lebanese, and the rest all need a Persian countries help to defend themselves. There could be a Star of David above Beruit if the IDF had been given the order last year.

  13. Ahmed Ismail Says:

So, why the IDF were given the orders to stop the attacks? Listen to me, the latest Israeli-Lebanese war was a huge success for Arabs. The reasons of that war were even a big fat lie. You can visit this link to see the truth:

  14. nizam ali Says:

The Third World War is coming. Don’t doubt that. All the “small” fighting going on is leading up to the bigger one to come. Like someone told me, what is going on is just the preview to the big picture to come.
Keep in mind, this world is not out of control. the one who created it has it under His control. His knowledge is beyound us. We just watch His plan unfolding.
All the high tech. eqpt. that He allowed us to build, could be of no use. He is the All Wise.

  15. jcrue Says:

Ahmed, If you think the IDF gave it its full effort in Lebanon last year you are more deluded than I originally thought.

  16. muhammed Says:

i read this huge debate and i got lost but really everything i read was understood. i don’t know which one of you said i’ve got a degree in history, but you see history is made of man living through the present, only great events are recorded, and the many books you have read have been written by mans perception and his limited knowledge. thats why you can not rely totally on such evidence. i have read a book which is approximately 1400 yrs old and has never been changed, not written by man. it has clear history, strong facts (a.k.a science NOTE: some discoveries are not even true in this day so only the good stuff) how do i know it’s never been changed becuase it has moved from father to son and so on) what i am trying to say is that, that is a realiable book, read that it’ll help. israelies are from moses the christians are from jesus and the muslims are from muhammed some how it’s wierd that each of these nations followed from one man leaders could it be that they were trying to spread gods word if so could it be that they had there individual gods maybe not becuase each came one after another maybe they came and went spreading the word if you see each one brought down a script which script is correct maybe they all are but which ones are changed and which one are correct and untouched till this day…… that is what you have to find out. if there is not god then maybe this cosistency of men with scripts was just a freak of nature and the earths’ wierd energy affected the babies while they were in there mothers wombs. you are human and you were not born with knowledge, it (knowledge) was taught to you, what knowledge you have been taught or have read gives your perception of life, with whatever amount of facts those books contain, your knowledge is that much stronger. but it is upto you to educate. you say you have read many books read one more….read the quran
