Breaking News: BBC Gaza reporter says he’s well in Web video

Kidnapped BBC Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston said he was in good health and being treated well in a video released on Friday, the first since militants abducted him in the Palestinian enclave over 11 weeks ago.

It was the clearest evidence he was alive following his March 12 abduction, although it was not clear when taping took place for the video, in which the British reporter criticized Israel as well as London’s policy towards the Muslim world.

“My captors have treated me very well,” he said on the video posted on an Islamist Web site by a group called the Army of Islam which said last month it had kidnapped him.

“They have fed me well. There has been no violence towards me at all and I’m in good health,” said Johnston, wearing a baggy red sweater and sitting before a dark grey background.

The group holding him repeated its demand on the video for Britain to free Muslim prisoners, particularly the Islamist cleric Abu Qatada. Johnston criticized the British military presence alongside the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Scotsman, who turned 45 in captivity last month, is the only Western correspondent based full-time in the Gaza Strip, where a year-old economic embargo and fighting among militants have worsened living conditions for the 1.4 million people crammed into the territory and heightened instability.

None of several foreigners seized in Gaza has been harmed. None has been held so long, with most freed within days.

Saeb Erekat, a top adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, called the video “proof of life”, decried the kidnappers and urged the government led by the militant group Hamas to act.

“Who’s paying them? Who’s sponsoring them? They’re destroying the Palestinian cause. They’re harming us. They’re harming Islam and I believe the government must act,” Erekat, from Hamas’s rival Fatah movement, told the BBC.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas called for Johnston’s immediate release: “This is an action that does not serve Islam, does not serve the Palestinian cause, and does not serve those who have abducted him,” he said.

Mohammad al-Madhoun, an aide to Haniyeh, said the tape may show that Johnston was in good condition but was not a sign that a deal to secure his release was near — despite comments to that effect from another senior Hamas figure in Gaza a week ago.

Academics refuse to spy on Muslim students in UK

Lecturers last Wednesday said they would not spy on Islamic students or take part in “Muslim-bashing witch-hunts”.

Delegates at a meeting of the University and College Union in Bournemouth unanimously rejected government guidelines which they said could lead to staff being instructed by universities to report students for extremism.

Cliff Snaith, who teaches law at London Metropolitan University, said his job was “to present to students critical thinking, not to critically observe their lives, faiths, families or friends”.

“I teach law,” he added. “I do not impose, monitor or police law – and certainly not bad law and lousy legislation. Lecturers inform students, they do not inform on their students. It is that simple, not controversial.”

Mark Campbell, of the same university, said British universities “are not hotbeds of Islamic extremism that need to be cowed”, but a place for debate and discussion.

He claimed a student from Swansea who took a picture of London Bridge had recently been “arrested for terrorism” after a book called The Future Jihad Terrorist Strategy Against the West was found in his possession. The book had been recommended on his course’s reading list.

Paul Mackney, the retiring joint general secretary of the union, drew laughter when he criticised the home secretary, John Reid.

“They used to say there was something of the night about Michael Howard,” he said. “What we have now learned is that there is something of the dawn raid about John Reid.”

Mr Mackney said the main reasons for radicalisation were the war in Iraq and Muslim-bashing, adding: “The fact of the matter is if you are a student at university and you are thinking, if you are not radicalised, you are not thinking.”

He claimed that, at a meeting with the higher education minister, Bill Rammell, and his officials last year, union officials had been asked whether they would report people plotting a bombing in a university canteen.

Mr Mackney said staff “obviously” would – but to university or college management rather than Special Branch. “That is not the same as keeping a watch on the thought processes of Muslim students,” he said.

Sally Hunt, now the sole general secretary of the union, said lecturers had “a pivotal role in building trust”.

“These proposals, if implemented, would make that all but impossible,” she added. “Universities must remain safe spaces for lecturers and students to debate all sorts of ideas, including those that some people may consider challenging, offensive and even extreme.

“The last thing we need is people too frightened to discuss an issue because they fear some quasi secret service will turn them in.”

Outside the meeting, the higher education minister, Bill Rammell, said: “Violent extremism in the name of Islam is a real, credible and sustained threat to the UK. And there is evidence of serious, but not widespread Islamist extremist activity in higher education institutions.

“The guidance is not about targeting one particular community. It is about promoting safety within higher education institutions and the wider community and about higher education providers taking their responsibilities for the safety of all their staff and students very seriously.

“It is also about protecting vulnerable students from bullying and harassment and other recruiting tactics of violent extremist groups.”

A chilling glimpse of ‘stop and search’ Britain

Government ministers and police chiefs are demanding new powers to allow the police to stop and search people in the streets if they suspect them of terrorism. These powers echo the notorious “sus laws” of the 1970s.

Then the laws created an atmosphere of fear as police targeted young black men. Those laws were abandoned after widespread rioting in the early 1980s.

A glimpse of what these new laws would mean was shown last week when two foreign students were arrested for “terrorism” after taking snapshots of Tower Bridge.

Salam Abdulrahman is a politics student at Swansea university. On 14 May he and a friend travelled to London to arrange funding for a PhD.

After their meeting they decided to visit tourist attractions and walked around the capital taking pictures.

Salam told Socialist Worker, “We went to Tower Bridge and then to Big Ben.

“I took pictures of many beautiful views. The final one I took, minutes before being arrested, was a building belonging to the MI5 security services – which I only discovered was an MI5 building when in jail.

“We did not realise we were being watched. As we approached Scotland Yard we were stopped by police.

“They questioned us, took our student IDs and searched us.

“They radioed other police who arrived in two cars and they too questioned us, searched our bags and frisked us.

“They told us we were being arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. We were handcuffed and taken to a police station.

“There we were strip-searched, fingerprinted, photographed, swabbed for our DNA and put in separate cells.

“While I was in jail the police raided my room at the university. The broke down the door and seized my laptop, my other camera, CDs, books, passport and clothes.

“The next day I was interviewed by police. I was told that I would be charged for possessing a book called Future Jihad, Terrorist Strategies Against The West by Walid Phares, possessing a press ID, using the term Al Qaida in my emails and essays, visiting a number of places in Britain, taking photos of Tower Bridge which show the structure of the bridge, and having pictures of military people.

“They concluded that I was acting suspiciously and ‘collecting information for terrorism’. I was told that my Iraqi passport – I am a Kurd from Irbil – added to their suspicion of me. But these charges are unbelievable. I bought the book from my university bookstore for academic reasons – it is widely available.

“I was issued a press card before coming to Britain because I worked for the Kurdish Globe newspaper. The accusation that they found the term Al Qaida in my writings and emails is not a surprise.

“I am studying international relations and for one of my essays I had to collect a lot of articles related to radical Islam and terrorist groups.

“I also have relatives throughout Britain, and wanted to visit the places I had read about. There are thousands of tourists taking photos of Tower Bridge, and every photo shows the ‘structure’ of the bridge.

“I do have pictures with officers and soldiers of the South Korean Army who were based in Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. I worked as an interpreter for the Korean troops.

“I have been released on bail. I have to return to the police station on 26 June. What happened was a great shock. I recently wrote an essay on multiculturalism in Britain saying that the police do not discriminate on race.”

Sent in by a reader: I recently saw the article you linked about Adam Pearlman and his brand new feature film in which he plays the character Azzam Al-Amrika. As someone who speaks Arabic, I thought it would be interesting for WRH readers to know a little bit about this particular name. First, Azzam in Arabic means either “determined” or “resolved”. Second, “Al-Amrika” (it’s sometimes spelled “Amerika”) translates back to “America”. Interesting use of words Mr. Pearlman is using for a name, I’d say. But even without having to translate the whole name, no Arab has the last name of Amrika. The name, translated, almost sounds like a Bush soundbite.

Study: ‘The United States is among the LEAST peaceful nations in the world’

The United States is among the least peaceful nations in the world, ranking 96th between Yemen and Iran, according to an index of 121 countries.

According to the Global Peace Index, created by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Norway is the most peaceful nation and Iraq is the least, just after Russia, Israel and Sudan.

The index was compiled based on 24 indicators. They included the number of wars in which a country was involved, arms sales, violent crimes and relations with neighboring countries.

Fifteen of the top 20 most peaceful nations are in Western Europe, and higher income appeared to lead to higher levels of peace.
