“Muslims [today] are hated, not for their vices, but for their virtues.”

Professor Hugh Kenner – with whom I had the honour of corresponding shortly before his death – considered that without its poets the world would have already have long since succumbed to total exhaustion.
More practically, perhaps, we can view religion as playing a similar
valuable role in preserving traditional societies, and maintaining
higher values than the almighty dollar. But not all faiths have ‘what
it takes’ to resist the trend towards a world turned into a counting
house on top of a rubbish dump.
Indeed, both Judaism and the Protestant variant of Christianity are
implicated, more or less, in the rise of capitalism. Additionally,
traditionalist Catholics believe that their Church is now a shadow of
its former state, having virtually self-destructed after Vatican II.
While Eastern Orthodoxy and even Japanese Shinto play their honourable
part in resisting the rush towards a porno-trash non-culture, it is
pre-eminently Islam that is the biggest stumbling block in the way of
the New World Order.
In the first place Islam is a profoundly and genuinely democratic
faith, as opposed to the `democracy’ of fakery and computerised
trickery that characterised the election of Bush and Bliar. Following
on from this, Muslims also hold true to economic democracy in the form
of the prohibition of usury. Though now abandoned, this was also once
a doctrine of the Christian Church. Such a fundamental point is, to
say the least, unappreciated by the false prophets of globalist
capitalism, always on the lookout for fresh lands to reduce to a bland
and hence profitable mass – or mess.
When Muslims, like those `extremist’ Iranians, reject the societies
(perhaps non-societies might be a better term) of Britain and the US,
are they really wrong to do so? Or are they just being sensible in not
wanting a taste of the growing gap between rich and poor, the drug
addiction, the sleaze, the corruption, the social breakdown, the urban
gun crime and trash TV that more and more characterises these two
countries today?
Significantly, terms such as Ummah and Dar-al-Islam are more or less
untranslatable, indicating a degree of cohesion and comradely
brotherhood that those outside the Arabic and Muslim world can barely
understand.
Though few of us realise it, we in the West are spoon-fed a bogus view
of reality: the truth only comes out in peripheral areas. Times,
Telegraph and Observer dribble on and on about the wonderful EU
constitution, or how we must ‘democratise’ Iraq. However in the
travel sections of such papers you can still read the occasional
comment on the wonderful hospitality to be found in Libya or Syria, in
spite of everything that happened in recent years.
Apparently, tourists there can find themselves being invited, after a
passing acquaintance with a citizen of those ‘evil’ countries, to stay
and eat in private homes. Just try doing that in New York or London!
As Gavin Maxwell wrote of his stay in pre-Saddam and pre-American
Apocalypse Iraq :
‘Throughout our journey I was struck by the boorishness of Western
hospitality by contrast with that of the Arabs. If a stranger rings a
doorbell in Europe, he must produce some very good reason before he
can get into the house at all, much less eat there as a guest; yet in
the lands where there are neither doors nor doorbells the stranger is
not asked the reason for his presence, and to hesitate in setting food
before him would be shameful.’
The anti-Islam crowd often pipes up that some Muslim countries, most
notably Saudi Arabia and Iran, have a harsh judicial code,
particularly for errant women. While there is – of course – a kernel
of truth in this, I would suggest that Western countries should get
their own houses in order before interfering in the affairs of other
countries. As comparatively recently as the 1950s it wasn’t unheard of
for women to receive capital punishment in Britain and America on
highly dubious evidence of murder, when their real crime was
‘immorality’. More recently, President Bush laughed about the
execution of Karla Faye Tucker.
Today in Blair’s blight land, the single largest category of female
prisoners consists of the ‘desperadoes’ who have failed to pay their
TV licenses. Additionally, the high suicide rate across the entire
penal system means that the official view that Britain has no death
penalty is somewhat flawed to say the least.
As is clear from the Last Sermon of the Last Prophet, true Islam has a
civilised attitude towards woman, unlike the misogyny that disfigures
a significant amount of Judaic (and Christian) thought:
‘O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your
women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have
taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His
permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right
to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be
kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it
is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you
do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. ’
Muslims will have to face the fact that they are hated, not for their
vices, but for their virtues. The normal mind to a large extent rebels
against such a novel thought. As with the true story of what really
happened on September 11th, the average person has a mental block when confronted by the perverse, amoral wickedness implied by ‘hatred of
virtues’.
Most know or at least intuitively sense that two massive towers
couldn’t really have been destroyed by a pair of Boeing passenger
aircraft, but prefer not to contemplate the awful truth.
As for actual as opposed to fabled ‘Muslim terrorism’ – not that I
agree with the dubious practice of coupling faith allegiance to
terrorism – has there actually been any? There was the attack on the
USS Cole, of course, but can one really describe suicidally brave men
in motor-boats versus a huge floating leviathan as ‘terrorism’? Other
incidents such as Achille Lauro and the Munich Olympics have more than
a whiff of the agent provocateur about them.
America today, in line with its stultifying decay, hardly produces any
new contributors to the world of thought. Though scarcely comparable
to Mencken or Brooks Adams, the present-day philosophic duo of Beavis
and Butthead have it right: ‘People are STUPID’.
Yes, people are stupid, especially modern Britons or Americans. They
are pleased to accept assessments of one of the world’s great
religions from various self-interested parties with an axe to grind – from tame professors run by the intelligence agencies, to
fundamentalist ‘Christian’ Zionist nutcases who want to bring on
Armageddon.
The Prophet Muhammad whom they ignorantly deride was in actuality – by
the standards of his time and ours – an extraordinarily humane man.
One interesting fact that is seldom brought out today is that many
thousands of Western Europeans are direct descendants of the Last
Prophet.
As for Muslims and Arabs in general, they can take some small comfort
from the words of Beregond, the soldier of Gondor, in Tolkien’s Lord
of the Rings: ‘We have this honour: ever we bear the brunt of the
chief hatred of the Enemy.’

Christianity does not have such a great track record. during the Spanish Inquisition, 100,000 women were burned at the stake as witches. Worse yet, Christian fundamentalists helped get GW Bush into the White House.

A fine site and of course, in this article, much truth. The Western world appears to be under the spell of an ‘Evil Spirit’ – whether you want to understand that spirit as a real Being or whether you want to understand it as the cumulative-degenerative effect of illusions brought on by materialism. Most serious of all, as you point out in your post, is the decline of thinking and of the possibility of creative contributions to culture. I am horrified by the self-righteousness and blindness of many people.
See also John McMurtry, “Value Wars: The Global Market and the Life Economy” for further details about the intellectual blight that has descended upon the West – especially in “economic thinking.” Also, Israel Shamir argues that Islam is “the last katchecon” – the last real barrier to the reign of materiallism all over the world.
My blog “From the Catacombs” is a small attempt to promote a spiritualized thinking- I invite you to visit it.

Salaam Alaikum.
The Muslim gentleman and I who have come to know each other over a period of seven months and have sterted this interfaith reconciliation movement are not looking at the past or the death tolls inflicted by what ever faith.
As we have spoken over the phone and my daughter has listened and asked questions about what she hears me say and I hear his small children in the background playing and just being children. As he and I think and dream, plan and hope, I cannot help but think, that if others could listen in they would become convinced, that what we are trying to do is the right thing.i This is a new thing, think of it like this. You go to a pot luck supper and as you wait to eat you meet someone. Hello, is this your church? No I’m a guest actually I’m a Muslim….Oh well, lets eat!! It’s that simple sit talk get to know this person as a human being first before you label them an enemy. Do as St. Peter did sit eat talk learn they are just as human as you.
Grace and peace to you all…..Tawodi

wa alaikum salaam
Tawodi
i would like to offer sincere advice by saying that your thoughts sound flowery and pretty but far from being that to the educated (religiously) muslim your pursuit to unite all faiths is a waste of time and fruitless. WHY? if you speak to a muslim who follows his/her religion by 3 things ie: what Allah says, what the prophet muhammad says and what his companions say, then we will aid you to realise the following facts:
> Islam is the only religion on earth, ie: it is the only religion divinely revealed to all Prophets from Adam to muhammad, for All peopl, all places, all times. therefore renders it perfect and complete.
>we muslims accept all prophets and messengers including Moses and Jesus along with their original books, but other “faiths” reject the final messenger and the Quraan, therefore rendering their faith obsolete because if you reject one prophet, by necessity you reject them all, as all of them come from the same God- Allaah and both moses and Jesus predicted the coming of the prophet muhammad so the TRUE followers of Moses and Jesus are the muslims today.
>you cannot mix truth and falsehood, together as are the futile attempts at interfaith. can it be possible to mix heaven and hell? no impossible so neither can you combine their paths (religion), there are man “paths to God” that people have created for themselves, as fabrications of the divine testaments and revelations, but there is only One truth, One God and One way to Paradise, His way- not our way; not my way.
>Allah did not create this entire universe in balance and perfection for them to be left without guidance to be lost, He also gave them a complete perfect way of life for preservation from the evils of this world and from the hellfire in the next.
>the very goal you are attempting to achieve -UNITY of faiths is the very thing that divides us because you want to embrace differences, Islam forbids differing in faith because they divide people so we are given only One way of life divinely revealed by the creator of the heavens and the earth. you either choose to be rightly guided or not.So long as two people believe different things they will never be together, how can they work together when the muslim is working towards the herafter and paradise, sincerely for the pleasure of Allah and the non muslim is working for this limited worldly life and for the creation, not the Creator who gave him life and everything he ownes, they cannot be the same, tehy cannot be equal, they cannot go together.
>The only way to unite is on the Unity of ALLAAH He alone is the creator, Lord and sustainer of the universe and He Alone deserves ALL of our worship, not a stone or idol or created being or prophet or angel or messenger or cow or tree or rock or any created being that Allah has ,made subservient to us.
>the true muslims worship ALLAH ALONE the creator, not the creation, that is gross injustice, oppression and degradation and ingratitude.
> you make the choice

I think the reason most westerners now despise Islam is the absolute hatred with which the murderous activists within the religion seeth. We are stunned by the indescriminate bombing, shootings and/or beheadings of innocent men, women and children. Then they claim it is all for Allah While we know that selfish desires are probably more prominent in their motivations, we suspect that they have support from Islamic scripture. The lie of the virgins for the murderous suicide bombers and other so called martyrs is especially despicable, Their is something especially unloving (ie ungod-like, evil) about blowing up people (i suspect to send them to what the bombers believe is eternal damnation) while the bomber goes off to heaven to enjoy his stable of virgins (do Muslims really believe that the best thing about heaven will be getting laid?).
Another maddening thing about the religion is that none of the leaders, who supposedly have no earthly cares, only heavenly concerns, will come out and publicly denounce these atrocicites. It is either because they support these activities or are afraid to denounce them. Neither choice appears to be motivated by loving God more than this world. So please do not be too arrogant and self-righteous about your religion. How many of your people lead materially humble lives by choice? They certainly did not hesitate to loot everything in sight in Iraq. And please do not assert that you accept Jesus because you certainly do not accept all of his teachings. This means that you believe he is a lunatic or a liar. And you kid yourself once again if you actually believe that Jesus encouraged his followers to look for Muhammed.
The Christian religion has had its problems but these stem from the evil in people, not the religion itself. The true religion is actually not a religion but a relationship. A relationship with a Savior and living God that is motivated by love, forgiveness and a hope that all will chose to accept the grace that God so generously has offered, and together enjoy eternity forever. For a more realistic look at eternity, you might read Matthew 22. In closing, which Islam is correct, the Shiite one that revels in killing Shias (even ones in a funeral procession) or the Shia one whose path to holiness involves killing Shiites? If you would ask me the same thing about catholics vs. protestants in the UK, I would say neither was acting out of their relationship with God but out of a desire for political power, another earthly concern that also obviously motivates many Muslims. So there are greedy people who affiliate themselves with all religions.

Well said Joseph. However, I am a Muslim but not the type that you have written about. I agree that there are many factors in Islam that many turn a blind eye on. But then again, that can go with ALL the religions. You speak of Christianity as a “love, forgiveness” religion. I can assure you that Islam is the SAME. Just like you mentioned that the problems in Christianity are not from the religion but from the evil in people, Islam has been hijacked by these same “evil people.”

To all who read this there is a misunderstanding of my intent and the intent of all of us in The People of Abraham interfaith group. We are NOT trying to combine faiths but simply have others learn that we as human beings CAN learn to accept that as you believe is your business and as I believe mine. As people of the Book we are taught not to kill wantonly. We are taught to respect that others do NOT believe as we that does NOT mean they are less, indeed it means they are humans on a different path to God/Allah, as are we all. to condemn one for the path they choose with the writings of all of our books Bible N.T. and Quoran engraved on their hearts is WRONG. That is what we believe this is the path we are pursuing PEACE Justice among men and women world wide. Is this a bad thing?? Rev. Bruce ………..Tawodi
